Newton is a large suburban city located 13 miles west of Boston, Massachusetts. It is positioned in Middlesex County and is the 3rd largest city therein. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were approximately 89,045 people living in Newton in 2016. Newton is located in a region of the United States that was originally inhabited by Native American Indians of the Nonantum tribe. In 1651, Minister John Eliot convinced the Indians to relocate to nearby Natick. The relocation of the Indians allowed for the arrival of European-American settlers. By 1688, a community was established. The community became an incorporated village under the name Cambridge the same year. In 1766, the community was renamed Newton and became a city in 1873.
